First Meetings

Initial meeting

Meeting of six founding members: probably four Smiths (Joseph Sr and Jr, Hyrum, Samuel) plus Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer, though other lists exist.

April 6, 1830

A church is organized at the home of Peter Whitmer in Fayette, New York. Oliver delivers the first sermon. Several baptized.

June 1, 1830

Articles and Covenants (D&C 20) are ratified; Elders, priests, and teachers ordained.

Primacy of First Presidency

Joseph is sustained as "president of the whole church" for the first time with Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams as counselors, and as assistant counselors, three Smiths and Oliver Cowdery. The First Presidency and assistant counselors are to be considered "the heads of the Church." Three apostles are rejected and four high counselors dropped..

Solemn assembly

Hosanna shout; washing of feet. Joseph speaks three hours. His vision of Kirtland, plea to save the bank. Night-long meeting of prophesy, speaking in tongues, etc.

Apostates (1864)

George A. Smith recalls the unusual characters and spiritual manifestations of the early Kirtland period, especially Ezra Booth. Joseph and Sidney tarred and feathered. Dedication of the House of the Lord at Kirtland. The bank failed because Warren Parrish and other apostates embezzled funds. Councils and trials were held constantly in Kirtland.
