Minutes of June [4], 1831
June [4], 1831, Kirtland, Ohio.
First conference of the Church in Kirtland. First ordinations to the High Priesthood. John Corrill and Isaac Morley named assistants to Bishop Partridge. Exhortations by Joseph, Sidney, Lyman Wight, and Harvey Whitlock.

John Whitmer, writing after the August 1835 publication of the Doctrine and Covenants, dates the conference June 3. However, Levi Hancock, writing in August 1831, and Ezra Booth, writing in September, give the June 4 date.
Several glaring errors in the list of those present suggest the minutes in the Far West Record were not written at or shortly after the meeting:
  • David Whitmer is listed as present when by his own account he was not.
  • W. W. Phelps is listed though he did not arrive in Kirtland until eleven or twelve days after the conference.
  • The three men who were possessed by the devil (the Man of Sin) at the meeting—Leman Copley, Harvey Green, and Heman Bassett—are not listed, though three independent sources feature them prominently. The possessions, exorcisims, and the remarks of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and Lyman Wight are also absent.

Date June [4], 1831     FWM, 3–4.
