First Ordinations to the High Priesthood

The High Priesthood was conferred for the first time on June 4, 1831.

There are two lists of elders ordained to the High Priesthood by Joseph Smith and Lyman Wight. Both are late. John Whitmer's history was written after August 1835 and before February 1838); and the Far West Record (written by Ebenezer Robinson and Hosea Stout in 1838–1839). Both appear to have used the same now-unknown source (presumably Whitmer's original minutes).

The two lists follow the same sequence with notable exceptions:
  • J. Whitmer
From Historian to Dissident: The Book of John Whitmer, edited by Bruce N. Westergren (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1995 ).
    , FWR
Far West Record: Minutes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830-1844, edited by Donald Q. Cannon and Lyndon W. Cook (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1983).
, and the testimonies of Lyman Wight, Ezra Booth, Zebee Coltrin, and Philo Dibble agree that Lyman was the first ordained, by Joseph Smith, and that Wight ordained most of the others. Levi Hancock reports that after addressing the assembly, "Joseph put his hands on Harvey Whitlock and Ordained him to the high Priesthood." Later, he "ordained Jacob Scott and some others to the high Priesthood." Finally, "Joseph Smith Called on Lyman Wight to lay his hands on his head and say what God should tell him to say he did and the thing was so large I cannot write them." Hancock does not mention any ordinations by Lyman Wight.
  • Wight recalled that when he was ordained, "I then ordained Joseph and Sidney and sixteen others."
  • The ordination of Sidney Rigdon is in dispute.
    • In J. Whitmer
From Historian to Dissident: The Book of John Whitmer, edited by Bruce N. Westergren (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1995 ).
his name appears directly after Wight. Four names later, Whitmer adds that they "were ordained by Lyman Whight exce[p]t S Joseph Smith Jr except Sidney Rigdon," but Rigdon does not appear as one of Lyman's ordinations.
    • In Lyman Wight sketch
Lyman Wight autobiographical sketch accompanying a letter from Wight (Mountain Valley) to Wilford Woodruff, Aug. 24, 1857. Manuscript (probably a copy). Histories of the Twelve, CR 100 / 93, Church Archives.
, after his ordination by the prophet, Lyman "then ordained Joseph and Sidney and sixteen others."
    • In FWR
Far West Record: Minutes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830-1844, edited by Donald Q. Cannon and Lyndon W. Cook (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1983).
Rigdon appears last in the ordinations performed by Lyman Wight.
  • Lyman Wight sketch
Lyman Wight autobiographical sketch accompanying a letter from Wight (Mountain Valley) to Wilford Woodruff, Aug. 24, 1857. Manuscript (probably a copy). Histories of the Twelve, CR 100 / 93, Church Archives.
    and J. Whitmer
From Historian to Dissident: The Book of John Whitmer, edited by Bruce N. Westergren (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1995 ).
both attest Lyman's ordination of Joseph Smith, though Wight lists him first and Whitmer lists him next to last with himself as last.
  • FWR
Far West Record: Minutes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830-1844, edited by Donald Q. Cannon and Lyndon W. Cook (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1983).
names six men ordained by Joseph Smith; omitting Sidney Rigdon, J. Whitmer
From Historian to Dissident: The Book of John Whitmer, edited by Bruce N. Westergren (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1995 ).
has five; in Lyman Wight sketch
Lyman Wight autobiographical sketch accompanying a letter from Wight (Mountain Valley) to Wilford Woodruff, Aug. 24, 1857. Manuscript (probably a copy). Histories of the Twelve, CR 100 / 93, Church Archives.
    only Lyman Wight is mentioned.
  • Wight reports he ordained eighteen to the High Priesthood, including Joseph and Sidney in the first positions; FWM
Far West Record manuscript, Church Archives, LR7874.
names eighteen, including Joseph and Sidney in the last slots; J. Whitmer
From Historian to Dissident: The Book of John Whitmer, edited by Bruce N. Westergren (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1995 ).
names thirteen, omitting six in a row, probably the result of scribal error. Joseph appears in twelfth place. Whitmer places himself after the prophet and omits Sidney.
