Minutes of October 6, 1838
On the day Joseph Smith arrives in DeWitt, Thomas B. Marsh and Brigham Young conduct quarterly conference in Far West. Eight missionaries volunteer, conference votes John Taylor into the Quorum of the Twelve. John Murdock and George M. Hinkle replaced on high council.

Benjamin L. Clapp in Kentucky Benjamin L. Clapp, just returned from Kentucky, reports many doors were open there.
Mission volunteers A call is made for "volunteers to go into the vineyard and preach." The following elders volunteer:

Luman A. Shurtliff
James Dana
Ahaz Cook
Isaac Decker
Cornelius P. Lott
Alpheus Gifford
No boasting President Marsh instructs them "not to go forth boasting of their faith, or of the judgments of the Lord, but to go in the spirit of meekness, and preach repentance.
Apostle John Taylor John Taylor is requested to speak "on his feelings respecting his having been appointed as one of the Twelve." He says he is "willing to do anything that God would require of him."
Vote Vote is taken for Elder Taylor to fill the vacancy in the Twelve.
Ordinations Stephen Chase, president of the elders quorum in Far West.
Isaac Laney, Horace Alexander, Albert Sloan, elders by "the Presidents."
High council changes Samuel Bent and Isaac Higtbee are "appointed to fill the places of John Murdock and George M. Hinkle," they having moved to DeWitt.
Adjourn Conference adjourns to first Friday and Saturday of January at 10 a.m.
