September 29, 1831   Amherst, Loraine county (50 miles west of Kirtland). Elder Chauncy Odle is "silenced as a preacher."
October 1, 1831 *   Joseph ordains Joseph Coe and W. W. Phelps "to the High Priesthood." Elders to warn the inhabitants of the earth about the last days.
October 10, 1831 *   Dispute over land, house between Joseph Smith Sr., Ezra Thayer, Frederick G. Williams.
October 11, 1831 *   (Hiram) David Whitmer and Reynolds Cahoon are "ordained" to visit the "branches" and raise funds for Joseph and Sidney. Four others will also be assigned.
October 21, 1831   (Hiram) Sidney calls the case of William Cahoon and Peter Devolve, accused of abusing a child of Newel K. Whitney. Joseph and Sidney to present the case to the church in Kirtland and direct the two to "make sufficient acknowledgement of their sins or be dealt with according to the law of this Church."
October 25–26, 1831 *   (Orange) High priesthood is the power to seal to eternal life. Brethren willing to give all to God. Greatest blessings for those who support the Prophet's family. Joseph declines to describe Book of Mormon translation process. Fund-raising missionaries. Sidney rebukes brethren for not taking ordination to the High Priesthood seriously. Oliver and David instructed regarding the selection of the Twelve.
November 1–2, 1831 *   (Hiram) Resolve to publish 10,000 copies of the Book of Commandments. D&C 1, 67, 68. Brethren bear witness to the truth of the Book of Commandments.
November 8, 1831 *   (Hiram) Sidney: errors in the commandments. Joseph to correct. Oliver to edit everything else published in Independence.
November 9, 1831 *   (Hiram) Authorization for Sylvester Hulett and John Noah to be ordained.
November 11, 1831 *   (Hiram) Reynolds Cahoon is not to go to Zion in the spring. He is to go on his mission now.
November 12–13, 1831 *   Joseph requests compensation for himself, Oliver, and Martin for their work on the revelations. Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, John Whitmer, and Sidney Rigdon are to "manage" them. The families of Joseph, Hyrum, William, and Don Carlos Smith, the Whitmers, and Hiram Page have earned inheritances in Zion.
January 2, 1832   Several excommunicated.
December 3, 1832 (Kirtland) *   Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon ordain Noah Packard a priest.
December 3, 1832 (Zion)   High priests to meet separately, ensure that elders or high priests are set apart over branches, and look for prospective missionaries.
December 5, 1832   Solomon Humphrey is called on mission with Noah Packard.
December 5, 1832   John P. Greene ordains Horace Kingsbury an elder.
December 18, 1832   Curtis Hodges and Shadrack Roundy are called on missions.
December 19, 1832   Lyman Johnson ordains William Smith an elder.
December 27–28, 1832 *   High priests pray for the Lord to reveal his will. D&C 88:1–126 (the Olive Leaf) is received over two days.
January 2, 1833   Conference of elders assigns mission to John P. Greene and Philemon Duzette.
January 9, 1833 [*]   United Firm hires Frederick G. Williams $300/year for his services as assistant scribe.
January 13–14, 1833 *   Doctrine and Covenants Section 84 is considered. Joseph's letter of January 11 to W. W. Phelps (about the revelation) is approved. The president of the High Priesthood is to preside at Sunday meetings and in his absence, the bishop. Orson Hyde and Hyrum Smith are assigned to write to the Saints in Zion about it and about "the subject" of letters written by Elders Phelps and Gilbert. On the 14th, the council approves the letter written by Orson and Hyrum.
January 22–23, 1833 *   January 22, speaking and praying in tongues. January 23 §, traditionally designated as the founding date of the School of the Prophets, manifestations of the gift of tongues continues. Washings instituted. Joseph Smith Sr. blesses the prophet that he will continue in office until the Savior returns. Willful sinners to be delivered over to the buffetings of Satan. Meal of the Lord's supper.
January 29, 1833   Gibson Smith is ordained an elder.
February 13, 1833 *   Burr Riggs charged with not magnifying his calling and treating counsel with contempt.
February 26, 1833   Burr Riggs excommunicated for neglecting his duty, not caring how soon he is cut off.
March 18, 1833 *   At Sidney's request, Joseph ordains him and Frederick presidents of the High Priesthood as directed in the revelation of March 8. They are equal with Joseph in the keys of the kingdom and presidency of the High Priesthood. Many see visions of the Saviour and concourses of angels.
March 19, 1833   Six missionaries return to Kirtland. Their motives are questioned. One is rebuked for having no special business in Kirtland and not paying board. All to raise funds for Kirtland's poor.
March 23, 1833 *   After investigating prices of available properties, Ezra Thayer and Joseph Coe are ordained church agents to negotiate purchase of three farms.
April 2, 1833   Frederick is to superintend the French farm purchased on March 23—hire men to work the brickyard and lease the rest. Ezra Thayer to purchase a tannery in Kirtland.
April 30, 1833 *   Albert Brown to raise funds to pay rent for schoolhouse meetings. John P. Greene to preside over church in Parkham. Vienna Jacques not to leave for Zion until William Hobert is ready to go with her.
May 2, 1833 *   The presidents of the High Priesthood rule the ordination of certain elders and a priest in Norton, Ohio "was illegal."
May 4, 1833   Hyrum Smith, Jared Carter, and Reynolds Cahoon to oversee fund-raising for school house.
June 3, 1833 *   Doctor P. Hurlbut is excommunicated. Revelation of the exterior dimensions of the house of worship and school of the prophets.
June 4, 1833 *   A council of high priests is unable to agree on the disposition of the French farm. Revelation: Newel Whitney to manage farm, John Johnson to be admitted to the United Firm. He is ordained to the High Priesthood and admitted to the firm.
June 6, 1833 *   Construction on the House of the Lord to begin immediately. Doctor Hurlbut guilty verdict upheld, but he is restored due to his "liberal confession." Daniel Copley excommunicated for refusing to fulfill a mission assigned by the council.
June 21, 1833 *   Doctor Hurlbut guilty of indiscretions with "the female sex" but is restored thanks to a "liberal confession." Daniel Copley excommunicated for refusing to fulfill a mission. (Two are ordained high priests to make twelve.)
June 23, 1833   General Council excommunicates Doctor Hurlbut for fraudulent confession.
June 24, 1833   Names of the temples to be erected in the City of Zion.
June 24, 1833   Westfield, New York excommunication for "false and slanderous reports, and not observing the order of the gospel."
July 13, 1833 *   Council of elders, including Brigham, Joseph, Newel K. Whitney, John Smith, and Luke Johnson. James Lake should move to Kirtland rather than Zion.
September 11, 1833*   United Firm decides to start a press in Kirtland under Frederick G. Williams to publish the Messenger and Advocate. Oliver Cowdery to publish the Millennial Star in Kirtland until publication can resume in Independence.
September 28, 1833   Council of elders decides members who able and willing should move to Kirtland rather than to Zion.
December 26, 1833 *   Council of elders excommunicates one elder for failing to reform, another for missing meetings and desiring to be cut off. At a bishop's court, Joseph Smith rebukes two brethren who have been complaining about Bishop Whitney. Sidney Rigdon also lectures them. They confess and are forgiven.
December 27, 1833   Bishop's court adjourns without taking action when accusors fail to appear.
January 2, 1834   Bishop's court excommunicates Wesley Hulbert fails for denying the faith, speaking reproachfully of the church, and saying he does not believe Joseph Smith is a true prophet.
February 9, 1834 *   New Portage church to assist building House of the Lord in Kirtland rather than their own meeting house.
February 12, 1834 *   Joseph's first allusion to conferral of office by an angel. Before translation, Martin Harris says, Joseph drank too much. Martin admits his mind has been darkened, promises to do better.
February 17, 1834 *   The high council of the Church of Christ is organized with three presidents and twelve high priests. Church court procedures.
February 19, 1834 *   Ratification of the constitution of the high council. Organization of the council "according to the ancient order."
February 20, 1834 *   Non-compliance with Word of Wisdom renders members unworthy of office. Missionaries assigned to Canada, Orson Hyde and Orson Pratt to raise funds in the East.
February 24, 1834*   Saints want to return to Jackson. Joseph declares he will redeem Zion. Thirty or forty volunteer.
March 17, 1834*   Joseph and other leaders meet with New York brethren to raise men for Zion's Camp, funds to purchase land, and pay $2,000 of Kirtland debt.
April 4, 1834 *   George F. James explains he couldn't fill mission because he lacked the funds, denies he missed meetings or spoke lightly of a brother. Joseph and council are satisfied.
April 20–21, 1834 *   (New Portage) Joseph refers to "the revelation of the priesthood of Aaron" and "the revelation of the high priesthood." Book of Mormon and gathering of Saints essential before the cataclysms that are near. Raising funds, volunteers for Zion's Camp.
May 3, 1834 *   Name change to the Church of the Latter Day Saints.
August 4, 1834   "a council of Elders assembled in I ordained Thomas Colburn. Elder; and resolved to send Elder Zerubbabel Snow to canada to labor in the Ministry."
August 11, 1834 *   Sylvester Smith's accusations of "criminal conduct" by Joseph during Zion's Camp. Joseph is exonerated, Sylvester's confession is to be published and the branches notified.
August 23, 1834   Council approves article vindicating Joseph Smith's conduct on Zion's Camp to be published in the Evening and Morning Star and circulated as a broadside. Sylvester Smith guilty of a misdemeanor and is "disqualified" to act in his office until "a trial before the bishop assisted by twelve high priests can be had." Seventeen members of Zion's Camp sign the article for the Star.
August 28, 1834 *   Joseph's conduct in Zion's Camp upheld. Sylvester Smith rebuked.
August 29, 1834   Concluding testimony in the Sylvester Smith case—he is blamed for confrontations with Joseph Smith during Zion's Camp: insubordination, threatening Joseph's dog, arguing with him, refusing to share bread. Joseph didn't steal a quilt, it was given to him. Sylvester to publish confession. Detailed terms dictated. Sylvester signs statement under duress.
September 8, 1834 *   Joseph and Oliver heal a sick woman. Use of the gift of tongues. One disfellowshipped.
September 24, 1834 *   Sylvester Smith is dropped from high council, Hyrum added. Book of Covenants proceeds. Newel K. Whitney store.
November 28, 1834 *   John H. and Joseph H. Tippets, agents for the Lewis, New York church, should remain in Kirtland for the winter and turn assets over to Joseph until April 15, 1835.
December 5, 1834 *   Oliver ordained an Assistant President of the High Priesthood. Stop calling each other by first names—disrespects callings.
December 6, 1834 *   Smith men, Oliver, Sidney, and Reynolds Cahoon meet. Hyrum admitted, ordained to the presidency of the High Priesthood.
December 28, 1834 *   Oliver Walker was not disfellowshipped or excommunicated in a December 1831 dispute. '"Presidents J. Smith Junr. & S. Rigdon" comment on "the order of offices and titles in the church," and the council unanimously concurs.
January 18, 1835 *   Members in Bolton, New York, should move to Kirtland rather than to Zion.
February 14, 1835 *   Zion's Camp veterans acknowledged, ordained. In fifty-six years (1896) it will all be over. Now "the works of God shall begin to break forth." Those present endowed with power. The Three Witnesses select Twelve Apostles. Lyman, Brigham, and Heber are blessed.
February 15, 1835 *   Ordination blessings of Orson Hyde, David W. Patten, Luke Johnson, William E. McLellin, John F. Boynton, and William Smith.
February 21, 1835   Ordination blessings of Parley P. Pratt, Thomas B. Marsh, Orson Pratt, charge of the Twelve by Oliver Cowdery.
February 27, 1835   Leadership meeting. Joseph on importance of keeping minutes. Twelve are called the Traveling High Council. Their authority.
February 28, 1835   Ordination blessings of seventies.
March 1, 1835   Ordination blessings of seventies, elders. Joseph on importance of the sacrament.
March 7–8, 1835 *   Blessing meetings, mostly seventies. House of the Lord builders and donors (listed) "own and control it." Blessings, ordinations, mission calls—several to the Lamanites, one to the clergy.
March 16, 1835 *   Asa Lyman and Alpheus Cutler rebuked for tarnishing Reynolds Cahoon's reputation without cause. Alpheus to publicly confess that he has complained about his pay for working on the House of the Lord.
March 28, 1835   The Twelve confess their faults, ask for forgiveness and a revelation to comfort and inspire them on their mission.
May 2, 1835 *   Priesthood domains. The Twelve: seated by age, rotate presiding responsibilities, regulate church affairs abroad. Ordinations require vote of the church membership. Visiting elders must obtain consent of local authority. Twelve call seven presidents of the Seventy on missions. Seven presidents call and ordain new seventies. Redeem Zion or die.
June 6, 1835   New Portage, Ohio conference. New Portage branch 100 members, Strongsville 15. David Matthews and Israel W. Barlow reconcile. Ambrose Palmer accused of assisting brother to abscond with money. Saved property for widow and orphans. Branch members support. Acquitted. Elder Barkdall and Elder Keeler rebuked. Salmon Bosworth accused using harsh language, unchristian-like conduct toward Brother and Sister Meads; injured Mary Ann Point's reputation. Guilty. Aaron Smith charges Milo Hays excommunicated for not obeying Word of Wisdom and covenant breaking.
June 7, 1835   Joseph preaches, four baptized; evening ordination of Jacob Meyers. Elders Barkdall and Keeler are given one week to settle their differences. Bosworth accepts council's verdict and agrees to make restitution. Elders admonished for neglect of duty.
June 14–15, 1835   Letters of W. W. Phelps and Oliver Cowdery regarding Rev. John Hewitt.
July 14, 1835 *   Edmund Bosley is excommunicated for breaking his covenant to loan money to print the revelations. Isaac Bishop to confess speaking evil of leaders.
August 4, 1835 *   High council of the church presidency (7 members) and others consider letter of Warren Cowdery reporting Twelve hadn't raised money for House of the Lord at Freedom, New York; and William E. McLellin's letter to his wife disparaging school of the prophets. Twelve are admonished and William E. McLellin and Orson Hyde are suspended.
August 8, 1835   Blessing meeting with Joseph, Sidney, and Oliver presiding. (Blessings not detailed.)
August 10, 1835   Reynolds Cahoon has failed to teach " in the way of truth & righteousness."
August 17, 1835   General Assembly authorizes publication of the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants. (Joseph is in Wisconsin.) Oliver presents two articles that are approved and printed as Sections 101 and 102—an article on marriage (monogamous) and an article on government.
August 18, 1835   Phineas H. Young is disfellowshipped for unchristian-like behavior on Burr Riggs testimony.
August 19, 1835   Almon Babbitt defense for breaking the Word of Wisdom: Joseph and others don't observe it. He is admonished to keep it anyway. Don't take wife on proselyting missions.
August 24, 1835 [*]   Jonathan Stevens and sons Uzziel and Lyman, and son-in-law John E. Page to move their families to Kirtland, then serve missions. The Tippits are to go to Missouri in the fall to purchase land for the Essex, New York branch.
August 31, 1835 *   Clay County high priests, elders, priests, teachers, and decons to recognize the jurisdiction of the bishop and his counselors, and the high council. Others may be authorized to preach, but not to govern. Maintain a low profile: do not perform any more ordinations, speak of punishments, or dispute with neighbors.
September 14, 1835 *   Laborer is worthy of his hire. Salary and expenses for Joseph Sr., compensation for scribe Frederick G. Williams. Oliver Cowdery church recorder. Emma select hymns and W. W. Phelps revise them.
September 16, 1835 *  

David Whitmer and Samuel H. Smith agents for the Literary Firm. Harvey Green excommunicated for the "hienous crime" of standing up for an elderly brother Joseph and Hyrum had rebuked.

September 19, 1835 *   Jared Carter admonished for commanding congregation to pray for committee, implying it was above the brethren, and for resisting counsel.
September 24, 1835 *   Redemption of Zion. Revelation: petition governor, fight to the death. David Whitmer to lead, Frederick and Sidney assistants. Joseph stands at the head, assisted by Hyrum and Oliver.
September 26, 1835 *   "Council of the Presidency of the Church" meets on letters William E. McLellin and Orson Hyde have written about Sidney's school. The two confess and are forgiven.
September 28, 1835   Francis Gladden Bishop is investigated for teaching false doctrine by a traveling high council in Kirtland. Gladden confesses and is forgiven. Another member is excommunicated for having sex with his fiancé.
September 29, 1835 *   Phineas Young is cleared of wrong doing with Book of Mormon inventory. Lorenzo Young apologizes for saying: poor ought not have children, sex is nevertheless permitted, does not intend to have more children.
October 3, 1835   A father and son acknowledge their error in criticizing the presidency and are forgiven.
October 5, 1835 *   Joseph instructs the Twelve: attend the organization of the School of the Prophets, washing of the feet, endowment from on high, move to Missouri next spring.
October 29, 1835 *   Parents whip daughter. Neighbors call it child abuse. Daughter threatens suicide. Joseph faults her. Parents should have raised her better. They promise to do better and are restored to fellowship.
November 12, 1835 *   Joseph to apostles: dark time. Believed church was complete when the Missouri high council was organized, but lived to introduce the washing of feet. An endowment of power. Destroying angel follows. Saints to gather to meet the bridegroom. Those who are prepared will see the Savior in the solemn assembly.
November 18, 1835   New Portage council finds an elder guilty of oppressing a sister by taking her property by going to court.
November 22, 1835 *   A missionary joined the Methodists, but asks forgiveness. Joseph and Sidney lecture. Received back into fellowship with license.
December 28, 1835 *   Joseph charges Almon Babbitt with misrepresenting him in the matter of the debating school incident. Testimony on both sides. Almon confesses to doing harm, but not to lying. Age of Reason referenced.
December 29, 1835   Orson Johnson charges William Smith with speaking against Joseph and the revelations.
January 2, 1836 *   William Smith confesses. Accepted by council and congregation.
January 6, 1836   Five new counselors are named to the high council of Zion to replace those called to be apostles.
January 13, 1836 *   "Grand council" meets. Vinson Knight counselor to Bishop Newel K. Whitney. Five new members of the high council of Kirtland. House of the Lord rules when used for worship.
January 14, 1836 *   Joseph and committee draft rules governing conduct in the House of the Lord.
January 15, 1836 *   Rules for the House of the Lord. Presidents are elected and ordained for priesthood quorums. John Corrill to enforce the rules of the House of the Lord.
January 16, 1836 *   The Twelve (traveling high priests) air their grievances over the harsh letter that the presidency sent them during their mission to the East (May 5–September 26, 1835), placement after the high councils of Kirtland and Zion at yesterday's council, and Hyrum Smith's comments during the Gladden Bishop trial. The presidency ask forgiveness if they have hurt the Twelve's feelings, Joseph pledges his undying confidence in them, the Twelve vote to covenant with him, blessings, good feelings all around.
January 17, 1836 *   At a Sunday meeting the First Presidency and Twelve confess their faults to one another, tears, gift of tongues "like the rushing of a mighty wind."
January 22, 1836   The First Presidency anoints and ordains Thomas B. Marsh to anoint and bless the Twelve. The Twelve then anoint and bless the presidency of the Seventy. Sylvester Smith has a vision of the horsemen of Israel in their chariots. After the blessings, the gift of tongues "fell upon us in mighty power. Angels mingled their voices with ours, while their presence was in our midst, and unceasing praises swelled our bosoms for the space of half an hour." ¶ Member Visions
January 28, 1836   As Joseph organizes the Seven Presidents of the Seventy. Sylvester Smith sees a pillar of fire resting on the heads of the Twelve; Roger Orton sees "a mighty angel riding upon a horse of fire with a flaming sword in his hand, followed by five others, [which] encircle the house and protect the saints … from the power of satan;" William Smith sees the hosts of heaven protecting the Saints on earth; Zebedee Coltrin sees the Savior, "as upon the cross, and a little after, crowned with glory upon his head, above the brightness of the sun; Joseph also has "a glorious vision," then instructs the seven presidents to anoint the seventy. ¶ Member Visions
January 30, 1836 *   First Presidency requires ordinations be approved by all quorums. Harvey Whitlock restored.
February 6, 1836   Quorums elect committee to draft license regulations and recording clerk.
February 12, 1836 *   First Presidency submits two resolutions: (1) none be ordained in the Kirtland stake without the unanimous vote of the presidency of the church and high council in Kirtland, the presidency of the church and high council in Zion, the Twelve, the bishoprics in Kirtland and Zion, and the seven presidents of seventies; and (2) none be ordained abroad without recommendation of the church and conference they belong to.
February 13, 1836   The Twelve concur with the first resolution but offer an ammendment to the second, asserting their authority over churches abroad.
February 17, 1836   Kirtland high council rejects the Twelve's amendment.
February 18, 1836   Kirtland high council rejects the Twelve's amendment for the second time.
February 22, 1836 *   First Presidency rejects the Twelve's amendment.
February 24, 1836   Quorums approve some for ordination, reject others. Oliver Cowdery, Orson Hyde, and Sylvester Smith to draft rules regarding licenses. The Twelve and presidency of the Seventy to issue calls for preaching in the area.
March 3, 1836   Quorum presidencies meet, approve resolutions for regulating licenses of "official members."
March 17, 1836   Ordinations.
March 19, 1836 *   John Boynton, Orson Pratt, Lyman Johnson, meet with church presidency, withdraw objections to regulation of ordinations.
April 2, 1836   Members of the United Firm plan to dissolve the company.
April 4, 1836   Letter of recommendation for Lyman Wight. Seven presidents of seventy refer charges of Orson Hyde against Jesse B. Harmon for singing ditties "which illy comported with the dignity of his office & calling," drinking and smoking pipe at John Johnson's tavern.
May 16, 1836 *   Jenkins Salisbury excommunicated. Hannah Brown and Lusenia Elliot confess, retain standing. Charles Kellog, fellowship withdrawn.
May 23, 1836   Charles Kelly "excluded" from the church for leaving his family. Azahel Perry cut off, Job L. Lewis excluded from the church.
June 10, 1836   New Portage ordinations.
June 16, 1836 *   Disfellowshipment for insufficient donations relative to ability.
December 22, 1836 *   The entire leadership of the church meets in the House of the Lord. Churches abroad are to support those who move to Kirtland. The expense of supporting indigent immigrants is too great.
     
January 29, 1837 *   Joseph and Sidney promote the Kirtland Safety Society, purchase Monroe, Michigan, bank.
February 19, 1837 *   Joseph silences critics after returning from Canada.
April 5, 1837   Seventies meet in the House of the Lord, anoint twelve, covenant for blessings, no food or sleep for twenty-four hours.
April 6, 1837 *   Wilford Woodruff account of the first annual April 6 solemn assembly. Six of seven presidents of the Seventy are released. First Presidency seals ordination blessings. Hosanna shout. Washing of the feet. Joseph speaks three hours. His vision of Kirtland, plea to save the bank. Sacrament. Night-long open meeting of prophesy, speaking in tongues, etc.

May 29, 1837   High council fails to try Frederick G. Williams, David Whitmer, Parley P. Pratt, Lyman E. Johnson, and Warren Parrish for conduct "unworthy of their high calling."
September 3, 1837 *   Joseph is sustained as president of the whole church, with Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams as counselors, and Oliver Cowdery, Joseph Smith Sr., and Hyrum Smith as assistant counselors. Apostles Luke Johnson, Lyman Johnson, and John F Boynton are rejected and/or "cut off". Boynton's justification: the bank failed. Joseph: no one was authorized to say that the bank was guaranteed. Boynton's confession is rejected. September 23, 1837   Jared Carter prefers charges against Oliver Olney and Amary Bony.

October 1, 1837   Lyman Sherman replaces Jared Carter on Kirtland high council by unanimous vote of the church.
October 2, 1837   Samuel H. Smith replaces Jared Carter as president.
October 7, 1837   Isaac H. Bishop disfellowshipped for attempting to use jointly-held home for personal collateral.
October 8, 1837   Oliver Granger new high counselor. William Huntington ordained a high priest.
October 11, 1837   Kirtland high council decides to invite quorum presidents to attend meetings.
October 15, 1837   High council and high priests quorum meet. Testimony of Brother Winchester and Brother James taken regarding Dr. Avard. His license is suspended until he comes to Kirtland and gives satisfaction to high priests.
October 18, 1837   Kirtland high council and quorum presidents discuss "existing evils" and conclude to undertake reform by pruning the vine night after night until complete.
October 22, 1837   Twenty-five disfellowshipped in a church meeting for mingling with the world, including some who danced with the world on Thursday (October 19). Among those named, apostles Luke Johnson and John F. Boynton.
