Doctrine and Covenants 39
January 5, 1831, Fayette, Seneca County, New York.

Gospel: repentance, baptism, Holy Ghost §. The Lord knows James Covill §. He is called to be baptized, preach, and go to Ohio §. Gathering, great blessings §. Second coming at hand §.

The BCR
Book of Commandments and Revelations, titled "Revelation Book 1" in Manuscript Revelation Books, edited by Robin Scott Jensen, Robert J. Woodford, and Steven C. Harper, (Salt Lake City: The Church Historian's Press, 2009). This is the first volume in the Revelations and Translations series of The Joseph Smith Papers.
version informs us that this revelation came at the behest of James [Covill], though he had not been baptized. We are also told that James, apparently called to serve a mission in the East, was instructed to go to Ohio instead. Joseph Smith (bold) did more editing of this revelation than most others. The redactions are, for the most part, inconsequential, with the possible exception of bestowing "the gift of the Holy Ghost" instead of bestowing "the Holy Ghost."
