Doctrine and Covenants 4
February 4, 1829, Harmony, Pennsylvania.

For Joseph Smith Sr. Serve the Lord, the field is white, thrust in your sickle eye single to the glory of God. Ask, knock

It is not clear whether the revelation was intended for Joseph Sr, Joseph Jr, or both, but the earliest versions of this revelation (below) could be construed to mean it was received by Joseph Sr. Similarly, D&C 9 may have been received by Oliver Cowdery. This is consistent with the introduction to the Book of Commandments and Revelations which states the revelations were "given to Joseph the Seer & others" (see D&C 3 introduction). The heading in the 1844 D&C (prepared but not published before the death of the prophet) attributes the revelation to Joseph Jr, receiving it for his father: "Revelation, through Joseph, the Seer, to Joseph Smith, sen., given in Harmony, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, February, 1829."
